After the clinker is cooled, cement plants grind it and mix it with small amounts of gypsum and limestone. Cement is so fine that 1 pound of cement contains 150 billion grains. The cement is now ready for transport to ready-mix concrete companies to be used in a variety of construction projects.

11.16 Gypsum Manufacturing

Potential emission sources in gypsum processing plants are shown in Figure 11.16-1. While particulate matter (PM) is the dominant pollutant in gypsum processing plants, several sources may emit gaseous pollutants also. The major sources of PM emissions include rotary ore dryers, grinding mills, calciners, and board end sawing operations.

Cement, How It Is Produced

Cement plants are typically located central to the minerals required to make the cement, which saves the transportation costs and reduces the price of the cement. Once the ore material to be used for cement has been mined, it is transported to the crushing/screening plant, where it is crushed and screened, to produce the desired particle size.

Generally cement plants are fixed where the quarry of limestone is near bye. This saves the extra fuel cost and makes cement somehow economical. Raw materials are extracted from the quarry and by means of conveyor belt material is transported to the cement plant. There are also various other raw materials used for cement manufacturing.

Most of the energy information in this report was provided by the Cement Association of Canada (formerly known as the Portland Cement Association of Canada). The Association captured much of the data from U.S. and Canadian Portland Cement Industry: Plant Information Summary for 1998, the last year for which data are available.

Cement manufacturing is a complex process that begins with mining and then grinding raw materials that include limestone and clay, to a fine powder, called raw meal, which is then heated to a sintering temperature as high as 1450 °C in a cement kiln. In this process, the chemical bonds of the raw materials are broken down and then they are ...

If the cement industry were a country, it would be the third largest emitter in the world. In 2015, it generated around 2.8bn tonnes of CO2, equivalent to 8% of the global total – a greater share than any country other than China or the US.. Cement use is set to rise as global urbanisation and economic development increases demand for new buildings and infrastructure.

An HMA plant can be constructed as a permanent plant, a skid-mounted (easily relocated) plant, or a portable plant. All plants can have RAP processing capabilities. Virtually all plants being manufactured today have RAP processing capability. Most plants have the capability to use either gaseous fuels (natural gas) or fuel oil.

Canada's cement industry has made progress over past two decades in each of these areas. Energy intensity improved by 21% between 1990 and 2010. There have also been improvements in the clinker-to-cement ratio and the use of alternative fuels is growing. As a result, the overall GHG intensity of cement manufacturing in Canada has decreased by ...
